“Babe, wake up. It’s time to get ready.” Someone is shaking me, but my body doesn’t want to play ball. Keeping my eyes firmly closed, I do my best to ignore them.

“Seriously, Mel. Get up, or we’ll be late for your appointment.” That makes me groan. The doctor. We have to go and get some tests. At least I remember that much.

Sitting upright, I stretch and try my best to remember something that hasn’t happened in the past few hours. Nope. I’m still where I was this morning. It’s a blank slate. Fuck.

“Feeling better? Anything coming back yet?” Way ahead of you, Adrien.

“Nope. Still nothing. I guess we’d better get these tests.”

Throwing my legs over the side of the bed, I suddenly panic.

“Adrien, I have clothes here, don’t I?” Please don’t tell me I wander around the house naked and never go anywhere. I wasn’t a human trafficking victim or something, was I?

He laughs. “Of course you do, sweetheart. You rarely wear them, but you have them. They’re in the closet.” His hand points to a giant wooden door set into the wall. Okay. So that’s what that was for. It’s time to explore.

Walking into the closet, I am taken aback by the rows of clothes that line the hangers. Hundreds of garments, all pristinely pressed and presented await my perusal, as do around a hundred pairs of shoes. Wow. All the clothes look brand new, which would make sense, I guess, as apparently, I never wear them.

Searching through the racks, I try my best to find a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. There are lots of frothy blouses, tight-fitting tops, teeny-weeny shorts, and skirts that need an extra meter of material. Sparkly dresses are in plentiful supply, as are strappy sandals. If you were desperate to wear anything completely unpractical, this is your closet.

“Do I own a pair of jeans?” I yell. “Or something that won’t display most of my fucking ass,” I then mutter under my breath. Have I awoken in a parallel universe? I don’t feel like the type of woman to waltz around in pretty dresses all day. What the hell?

“You would roll over in your grave if you could hear yourself.” Adrien is now lounging casually against the door, watching me as I look through the racks. There’s an amused half-smile on his face.

“I’m a bit of a fashionista, then?” I still can’t quite believe it myself. Hanger after wooden hanger can’t be wrong though, can it?

“That’s one way of putting it. You love shopping. Mind you,” he says, “show me a girl that doesn’t.” Hmm. I’m still not convinced.

After I’ve gone through the racks twice, I finally come up with something that’s almost decent. I’ve found a long black skirt, and while it’s skintight, it at least covers the parts that matter, although there’s a bloody great split up the side. The top half of the outfit is slightly more problematic, but I finally settle on a black lace cami and pair it with a sheer black blouse.
